““Uurgh, Mummy... the water smells funny.

And it tastes weird.

I don’t want to drink it.”

 
How many times do you hear children say this? And more so, how many times do you also feel the same way?
 
Natural pure water - a precious commodity that is fast becoming a scarcity.
It’s getting harder and harder to find pristine natural sources of water as over time with industrialisation, man has contaminated nearly every natural water supply with pollutants, toxic wastes and illegal dumping of chemicals. With over 120,000 types of chemicals in the world today, and another 1000 new ones added each year, it’s no wonder they find their way into our water sources.
 
What about our tap water?
Tap water from treatment plants is supposedly safe for drinking, but by the time it reaches your home through all the miles of underground pipes, the water will have picked up a lot of undesirable and unwanted “hitch-hikers”. Pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, organic and inorganic matters, sediment, rust, silt, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses and other toxic pollutants may still find their way into your drinking water and therefore your bloodstream.

Even chlorine which is added by treatment plants to disinfect and remove microbes and contaminants from our water is not good for the body in the long run. Its by-products, including chloroform, which is produced when chlorine mixes with organic matter, can be extremely harmful. Studies have linked chlorine with heart problems, cancer and arteriosclerosis. Boiling water does not get rid of chlorine – it changes it into a carcinogen called trihalomethane (THM). Carcinogens are cancer-causing agents.
 
In his article “Chlorination: A Link Between Heart Disease and Cancer”, Martin Fox, Ph.D. stated:
“Chlorine causes excess free radicals. Free radicals lead to cell damage. Once the cells are damaged, we see an elevation in serum cholesterol levels, atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries and plaque formation. Chlorine can cause all these problems related to heart disease and can also be a cause of cancer…. With cancer, free radicals create malignant cells. In the chlorination process itself chlorine combines with natural organic matter, such as decaying vegetation, to form potent, cancer causing trihalomethanes or haloforms. Trihalomethanes, commonly abbreviated THM's, collectively include such cancer causing agents as chloroforms, bromoforms, arbontectachloride and many others.”
 
Water Is Essential

Water, as we all know, is essential to the well-being of any living being. You can live without food for weeks even, but not without water. In fact the Traditional Food Pyramid is quite incomplete as it has omitted a very important element; water should be right there at the very base as it supports the entire structure. Water is necessary to hydrate our cells and transport the nutrients to the various parts of the body system.

Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, M.D., Director of the Water Institute of Japan, in his article “Benefits of Alkaline, Ionized Water”, stated that:

“Active oxygen molecules are extremely reactive and can also attach themselves to normal, healthy cells and damage them genetically. These active oxygen radicals steal electrons from normal, healthy molecules. This electron theft by active oxygen oxidizes tissue and can cause disease.”

“… If we can find an effective method to block the oxidation of healthy tissue by active oxygen, then we can attempt to prevent disease… One way to protect healthy tissue from the ravages of oxidation caused by active oxygen is to provide free electrons to active oxygen radicals, thus neutralizing their high oxidation potential and preventing them from reacting with healthy tissue.”
 
Oxidation, which is a regular function of metabolism and cell function, strips an electron from certain molecules. These molecules (called free radicals) then must steal an electron from a nearby molecule to repair themselves, which means that the nearby molecule must steal an electron from another molecule and on and on. This vicious oxidation cycle ends when an electron is taken from a molecule which has an excess electron to donate. These 'donor' molecules are called antioxidants. Nature provides this in Vitamins C and E, Beta Carotene, Selenium etc. These substances are reducing agents. They supply electrons to free radicals and block the interaction of the free radical with normal tissue. Studies have shown that people who regularly take large doses of antioxidants have much lower rates of heart disease, cancer and chronic degenerative diseases.

Pollution, chemicals, food additives, pesticides, chlorine, antibiotics etc are thought to dramatically accelerate the oxidation process, increasing the need for antioxidants. At the same time we are eating more refined foods which have had the vitamins and antioxidants removed or destroyed by processing.

Drinking normal tap water adds to the problem.

Why?

Normal tap water has a positive redox potential and usually measures between +400mV to +500mV. Because it has a positive redox potential, it is apt to acquire electrons and oxidize other molecules, and then rob your body of electrons in the form of energy.

Redox is a combination of the words reduction (having excess electrons) and oxidation (missing electrons). Redox potential or oxidation reduction potential (ORP) is measured in milivolts (mV) with an ORP meter. The higher the mV reading in the (+) plus category, the more damaged the water is. Why? Simply because it reflects a lack of electrons. For example, a reading of +400mV shows only 1 available electron. This is bad as it means the water is very clumped together at the molecular level and difficult to absorb. Also it is aggressive and apt to oxidize other molecules.  

On the other hand, it is the negative Redox potential that is beneficial to our body. As an example, a minus (-) reading of -72mV shows over one hundred million (100,000,000) available electrons. This is excellent because now the water is literally loaded with powerful electrons to donate to electron-thieving active oxygen.
